Meet our valued partner Kimberly Lauer in her own words:
My passion for family law comes from a very personal place. I was adopted when I was 14, and the attorney who handled my adoption, also a family friend, was my mother’s OB/GYN when I was born. As my adopted dad likes to say, “The doctor delivered me twice.”
What I learned from the adoption process was how family law can truly change the course of a life. My adoption was the pivotal moment that changed my life. My experience drives my passion to help transform the lives of the families I work with.
Supporting families has been the cornerstone of my career. I started my professional life working in nonprofit management and fundraising before attending the University of District of Columbia’s David A. Clarke School of Law. At UDC, I represented clients in DC landlord-tenant cases and Immigration Court, and was honored to receive an Equal Justice Fellowship for my work in the UDC housing clinic.
After law school I joined Maryland Legal Aid, where I tackled a variety of litigation and mediation matters. At Legal Aid, I had the privilege of guiding families through serious mental health and substance abuse issues. Among the many reasons I am excited to be part of the Z Family Law team is our firm’s commitment to serving families struggling with these types of challenges, meeting their needs with a keen understanding of the strain mental health issues and addiction place on families.
I decided to join Z Family Law because I appreciate our team approach to finding creative solutions. I am proud that our team focuses holistically on how our firm can work to change people’s lives. We come up with new and creative ideas that no one member of our team could have come up with solo. Our openness and camaraderie translates to better outcomes for our clients, because we understand that this is not just about filing papers. We help build support systems for people to make lasting changes in their lives.
Another thing I really value about our firm is the fact that we keep a very sharp eye on our client’s costs. We think very strategically about what a case requires, and help ensure that we can meet— and often exceed— our clients’ expectations without spending more than is absolutely necessary.
As an attorney at Z Family Law, I am excited to help expand our mediation practice. I have a passion for working one-on-one with my clients, coming up with solutions that meet the unique needs of their particular family. Being a family law attorney is about so much more than legal strategy and writing motions. It’s about understanding that what happens in a Courtroom can be unpredictable, and helping clients keep an open mind to create solutions that are right for their particular family. It’s also about building trust with a client so you can continue to serve as their needs evolve. As kids get older, or as financial situations change, or even with events like COVID-19, there are many ways we can help find solutions.
I have had profoundly meaningful experiences working with my clients. I have never been more humbled by my work than when a client expressed that I had saved her life. I never take the privilege of helping people for granted, and every day I am grateful for the opportunity to persistently advocate for my clients. I maintain extremely high standards for achieving great outcomes for my clients.
If I have the opportunity to work with you on your matter, know that I will work with you one-on-one throughout your matter to think creatively about how to best achieve your goals for your family’s future.
