Meet Megan Wood
Long before I joined the Z Family Law team, I learned firsthand through my life experiences about the ways family law matters impact families. In fact, my first interactions with family law issues happened before I realized it; I was born in Colombia but moved to NW Washington, DC when my sister and I were adopted by my wonderful parents at age two.
When my parents decided to divorce a few years later, I gained another firsthand experience of how family law matters transform lives. My parents were great examples of how to transcend a difficult situation, and though I’m sure it was hard at times, they kept their composure and a cooperative co-parenting attitude throughout my childhood and teenage years. My family continues to be a pillar of strength in my life, providing me endless support and kindness as I navigated the legalities of sorting out custody after I became a single mom.
From all of these experiences, I know how hard it is to keep a level head when you feel like everything around you is falling apart. I think there is a misconception that there exists a perfect rubric of “how to act” and what the “ideal outcome” is when it comes to breaking up, but the fact is that each situation is different because people are all different. We are allowed to make mistakes as human beings, but we can also certainly rectify them. One of the best ways to do this is by seeking out resources!
The person who helped me the most through my custody case was my lawyer — and now boss! — Christy Zlatkus, Esquire. She waded through the sea of my emotions to help me determine what my personal best outcome could be given my specific case. Knowing I had her on my side kept me afloat. Christy understands on a visceral level how compassionate, educated, and unbiased counsel can help people like me create our ideal, unique New Normal.
As Z Family Law’s newest Maryland legal assistant and receptionist, I use my own experiences to help our clients through their most challenging times. I formally joined Z Family Law’s staff in October 2019, after honing my administrative and client services skills as the Senior Client Services Manager at a privately-owned dog-walking company in Northwest DC and lower Montgomery County.
In my life, I’m most proud of my resiliency and ability to always make lemonade out of lemons. I’m incredibly resourceful and am proud that I’ve curated a happy and healthy life for my three-year-old daughter and myself. She and I live in Washington DC and when I’m not at work, I’m almost certainly with her. We enjoy taking strolls to the local playground, blowing bubbles on our stoop, going out for ice cream, and spending time with my friends and family.
Despite the happiness I have found in my New Normal, as any single parent can relate, there are many times when I feel like a duck: calm on the surface but paddling along like crazy underneath! Because I know the juggle so many of us face, I am proud to be part of a team that passionately works to support parents through challenging custody cases. I love being a part of Z Family Law because I have the opportunity to use my own life experiences, as well as the lessons I learned when Christy was my lawyer, to provide clients with the best possible experience and outcome.
