Hi! My name is Amanda Townsend.

Prior to law school, I had the amazing opportunity to work for Legal Services of the Hudson Valley as a AmeriCorp Vista Volunteer. I had the honor of working with veterans on a variety of legal issues, including family law. While I was there, I found myself naturally working harder for those who needed assistance with escaping a violent home, as well as child custody and child support matters.

Despite my obvious passion for family law, when I began my first year at The George Washington University Law School, I told myself that I would keep an open mind to all areas of the law. It wasn’t until I was sitting in an alumni seminar exploring entertainment law that I had a very loud thought: “What am I doing here? I know what I want to do.” My mind went back to the veterans and wives that I had served. This then got me thinking to how, from a young age, I had acted as a mediator in my parents’ relationship and how I encouraged my mother to escape my father’s violence. I remembered how fulfilling it was to help others through some of their toughest moments. From then on, I directed my legal education to focus on family and domestic violence law.

While in law school, I earned a Family Law Concentration by participating in the Domestic Violence Clinic and acing my Family Law coursework. I interned at some of the best organizations focused on assisting indigent individuals with their family and domestic violence issues, including AEquitas, National Network to End Domestic Violence, and Legal Services of Northern Virginia. Notably, while at Legal Services of Northern Virginia, I assisted several attorneys with cases of divorce, child custody, and child support. I also volunteered at the Family Court Self Help Center within the Superior Court of the District of Columbia where I assisted individuals in filling out the appropriate court documents that helped facilitate their pro se case.

As a family lawyer in Rockville, MD, I am grateful, and feel very lucky, to be working for a firm that shares my values, as I have always believed that divorce is not an end; it is a beginning to a new and bright chapter. I am especially happy to be working for my GW Law Alumni mentor, Christy Zlatkus, Esq., who is an exceptional leader in the legal community.

On a more personal note, I was born and raised near Sarasota, FL, and I am proud to call myself a Floridian … most of the time. I attended The Pennsylvania State University where I received a Bachelor of Arts in Criminology and three minors: Dispute Management & Resolution, Communication Arts & Sciences, and Theater. Being the massive nerd that I am, I spend my off time playing 5+ hour long board games, exploring a world in Dungeons & Dragons, and listening to show tunes.
